Nothing pushes a perfectionist’s buttons like a good challenge. But sometimes, challenges can cross the line, causing unhealthy stress
Being a perfectionist adds unhealthy stress to your life. Add to this an extreme challenge, such as the latest social media craze, and perfectionist comparisons are born.
If you haven’t heard about the “Belly Button Challenge”, you probably don’t spend enough time on Social Media. It’s a phenomenon that took off about a week ago, with young people posting images of themselves attempting to reach around their backs with one hand to touch their belly buttons.
In a perfect world, everyone would easily be able to do this challenge, right?
While it may seem more than just a little ‘odd’ to many of us, people all over the world are taking the “Belly Button Challenge” and using it to measure whether or not they are at a ‘healthy’ weight. If you can reach your belly button with one hand, presumably you WIN!
For the perfectionist, however, not being able to successfully complete a challenge often produces a negative self-image. For young people, this can sometimes lead to unhealthy behaviors in an effort to overcome perfectionist comparisons, such as:
- She can do it and I can’t
- My body ‘sucks’
- I’m too fat
- I’m just a loser
Yes, it’s hard to take the “Belly Button Challenge” very seriously – it’s even hard to pinpoint why it started. But it should be made very clear that no study has been found to support the “Belly Button Challenge” as a healthy weight measurement!
Being a perfectionist has its own serious challenges. Attempting something as frivolous as the “Belly Button Challenge” only leads to needless frustration – even if you’re NOT a perfectionist.
Instead, challenge yourself to ignore anything that invites perfectionist comparisons and focus on what makes you happy. Happy people tend to be healthy people. You’ll never be perfect, but you can be perfectly happy just to be YOU!
