The Only Resolution You Need To Make

“I resolve to matter” is this one resolution is the catalyst for all others.

It’s that time when many of us begin to reflect on what went well in the past year and what we would like to do better in the coming year. Maybe you want to eat better, exercise more, or take up a new hobby. But what if, instead of making a long list of goals, I told you that there is only one resolution you need to make that will bring you happiness and satisfaction for years to come?

Repeat after me: I will do something every day to ensure that I feel like I matter more.

Think about it: trying to perform this one simple step—feeling like you matter—provides a much deeper and more fulfilling resolution that will ultimately lead to healthier habits, such as stronger relationships and goals (aka what people usually have for New Year’s resolutions).

Better than the Gym

Focusing solely on feeling like you matter more increases your self-worth and happiness, and when we’re happy, all of those healthier habits we long for tend to fall into place. True happiness starts from within, not from external achievements or validation. Here’s what that can look like:

Improved Relationships: When you feel content with yourself, you have more to offer others, ultimately leading to stronger connections.

Increased Productivity and Motivation: Happiness fuels energy and focus, making achieving personal and professional goals easier.

Enhanced Confidence: Feeling good about yourself opens doors to taking risks, pursuing new opportunities, and meeting new people.

Why Happiness Matters

In Shawn Achor’s book The Happiness Advantage, he dives into the field of positive psychology and challenges the notion that success leads to happiness and argues that instead of thinking, “I'll be happier when…” the reverse is true; everything else falls into place when you are happier first.

Not sure where to begin? Here are 5 easy ways to start feeling happier and that you matter:

  1. Disconnect to reconnect. Give yourself the gift of time off of social media. Resist the urge to like, compare, and shop, and use that time to reconnect with yourself on a deeper level.

  2. Prioritize self-optimization. Don’t just “treat yourself”—bring some intentionality to your self-care by choosing activities that help you function at your physical, mental, and emotional best. Whether it’s by exercising, having coffee with a friend, curling up with a weighted blanket, or learning a new skill, choose what helps you find and define your favorite version of you.

  3. Do something that brings you joy and fulfillment. We live in a time when we always feel like we need to be productive. That certainly has a time and place, but just as essential are the things that bring us joy. Cooking, gardening, reading, napping, walking, drawing—the list is endless. These activities can be done with a friend or on your own, so long as it makes you smile and feel good about yourself.

  4. Stay present. Try meditating to ground yourself and recognize the thoughts that are not serving you. Acknowledge them and then let them go. If you cannot meditate, look around the room and note what you see, smell, hear, and feel in the moment. Using your senses is your superpower when emotions and thoughts threaten to take you away from the present moment.

  5. Be grateful. Gratitude practices are a wonderful way to self-reflect and brainstorm ideas about what feels good moving forward.

When you focus on self-happiness, your confidence builds, and you feel like you matter. And when you feel like you matter, you are better equipped to tackle other goals, such as improved health, stronger relationships, and professional success.
