Did you choose to be a stay-at-home spouse, but now you’re less than happy with the decision? Here are some things to consider about your role.
Recently, I was asked to share some thoughts with MarketWatch.com readers on why stay-at-home spouses are so resentful. In her article, Catey Hill addresses differing views on the realities of being a stay-at-home spouse and why some are happier with the arrangement than others.
As a Life Coach, I see the anxiety, guilt, stress and resentment that many spouses deal with when making the choice to either stay-at-home or work outside the home. For some, there is no easy solution.
For those choosing to stay-at-home, it’s not uncommon to experience:
- Resentment over missed opportunities
- Jealousy over a spouse’s success
- Anxiety over finances
- Less self-worth
The working spouse deals with issues, too, such as:
- Stress over being the major breadwinner
- Missing out on family time, family events
- Concerns over job security
To maintain balance at home and work, I strongly suggest that partners have an open conversation regarding each of their roles. In a marriage, the decision to be a stay-at-home spouse should be the result of healthy conversation and mutual understanding – a team effort.
There can be advantages and disadvantages to being a stay-at-home spouse, but there is no need to lose your identity or sacrifice your happiness when you:
- Have the right support
- Stay true to your values
- Recognize your strengths
- Take some time just for YOU
