As a contributor to the recent April edition of Better Homes and Gardens magazine, I share how parenting can be the best and toughest ‘job’ out there in my Good Kid Project column. As with any responsibility, parenting carries its share of tough decision-making. Let’s face it, when it comes to kids, sometimes you get it right and many times…you don’t.
Parents aren’t alone when it comes to facing mistakes. Every day, your kids also have a variety of choices to make and many of those choices are not as simple as you may think. Helping your kids to recognize unhealthy choices, accept accountability and face mistakes are all important and necessary to helping your children live happy, value-based lives.
Better Than Perfect Parenting
Of course, your child will be more willing to follow your lead when you consistently practice what you preach. Leading by example can be as easy as openly admitting your own mistake or owning a specific problem and letting them see you develop a solid solution based on the personal values shared by your family.
Just as it can for adults, having a sense of purpose will boost a child’s long-term happiness. Science backs the correlation between our emotions and heart health – a great reason to take the time to laugh with your children and show them your sincere appreciation for even the little things they do.
Keep in mind that adults aren’t the only ones needing a vacation. In today’s fast-paced world, even kids can benefit from a healthy dose of time away from the ‘daily grind’ of school and peer-pressure. If you notice that your child is having trouble sleeping, displaying emotional outbursts or exhibiting other signs of stress, find a way to create the opportunity for a family getaway. Not possible? Then take a weekend each month and devote it to family activities with a purpose, such as:
- Donating time and energy to a community cause
- Assisting those who are in need
- Participating in random acts of kindness
