10 Ways to Finally Make Fitness a Habit

Is it really possible to stick with an exercise program forever, or at least for a long, long time?

It sure is- and I am living proof.

When I was younger, I used to joke that exercise was against my religion. The mere thought of going for a run brought up such dread and emotional discomfort that I would avoid it at all costs.

Then I went to college, with its lack of supervision on curfews and pizza consumption.

Not wanting to succumb to the “Freshman 15,” I forced myself to start working out. At first, it felt like a necessary evil. Soon enough, though, exercise just became a normal part of my life.

Since then and, now, almost (not quite but almost) three decades later, exercise continues to be an integral part of my life. And I love it. Heck, I even taught group exercise classes for almost 15 years.

How did I go from dread to love of fitness? I changed how I approached exercise, from how I viewed it to how I did it.

And so, when K. Aleisha Fetters at US News & World Reports wanted my take on how to make fitness a habit, I jumped at the opportunity to share what worked for me and what I have used to help hundreds do the same. The article is entitled, “10 Ways to Finally Make Fitness a Habit.”

The top three are:

  1. Forget the ‘Go Hard or Go Home’ Mentality: You don’t need to workout for an hour. A five minute walk around the block is #BetterThanPerfect
  2. Stop Waiting to Have Time: Admit it, if you wait until you have time, you will never exercise. So instead, schedule your workouts like you do any other event that is important to you.
  3. Give it Eight Weeks: While some habits can take only 3 weeks, cementing a habit into your life with its craziness and unpredictability can take longer. Commit to eight weeks and you may be surprised how easy it is to consistently make exercise a part of your life.
